1. Mechanisms of change in interpersonal therapy. Considering interpersonal therapy's (IPT's) extensive evidence base in outcome research (Cuijpers, , Weissman et al., ), researchers have devoted surprisingly little effort to explaining mechanisms of change in know that IPT works well for some disorders, but little about why and by: -occurs in people with borderline personality disorder-when a person views him/herself and others as either all good or all bad and vacillates between these two views -splitting contributes toward a person's instability of emotions and interpersonal relationships.
